Artist Ben Ripper

We are going down the road to nearby Swaffham in Norfolk to visit with artist #BenRipper. Swaffham was made famous in the Stephen Fry television series ‘Kingdom’. Ben was a local character. Ben was, of course, artist, as well as local historian and, finally, gents’ barber. His shop window regularly displayed his artwork.

Market Cross, Swaffham, Norfolk – ink drawing with wash by Ben Ripper

I have one artwork by Ben Ripper in my collection. It shows the market cross in Swaffham town center. Nicely executed,Ben has a fine eye for proportions and architecture. An image from a bygone time beautifully rendered.

I gleaned my info off the Web. I would suggest contacting the Swaffham Museum, which holds a few off his works as well as he being a Swaffham local for more information on him.

I believe Ben Ripper was my mum’s uncle, we use to always go to Swaffham for are holidays, I remember staying with Ben at some point and his wife Winnie, he had a small museum in his garden which was very interesting, through his garden we could get to Cassie’s house who was also a relative, might of been Ben’s sister, he was a lovely man

I bought a beautiful oil painting by Ben Ripper in December at auction in Ludlow… it was love at first sight.

I’m fortunate to have a couple of his pictures and remember meeting him in the 1980’s. At the time I was working at Upstairs in the Guildhall in Thetford which was an art gallery/coffee shop run by a group of artists. I originally bought one of the sketches that he used to do at the location for his work and then added to it with a beautiful watercolour scene looking across snow covered fields to Swaffham. There were so many amazingly talented local artists but most seem to have been forgotten so it is great to here that he has managed to avoid that fate as his work deserves to be treasured.
